MOANATAIARI 1954 - A SECOND LOOK!
We previously looked at this photo in reference to the Moanataiari area pre reclamation and housing. Some eagle eyes have spotted that it also is a great photo for showing the area before the present highway connection to Tararu.
In 1954 the way to Tararu was to go down Burke Street past the foundry and then turn right into Tararu Road, onto to Tararu or further up the coast.

Looking at the photo (right), one can see the roads mentioned above. Running down the photo are Tararu Road on the left and Owen Street in the centre. Horizontally across the photo is Burke Street.The larger version below shows the street locations and redline marking the area of road development and the present extension of Queen Street.
